Student House
The 1,850 square foot Student House is located on the Rockland BOCES campus in West Nyack. The fully-renovated learning and living space was created to support Kaplan Community Development Center (KCDC) students, Jesse J. Kaplan School students and Rockland BOCES District-Based learners as they develop independent living skills prior to transition into adult services. The spacious learning space - modeled after a typical, suburban residential home - provides students instruction in daily living and simple job skills within an in-school program. The Student House is most suited for students with disabilities between the ages of 14 to 22 who expect to leave school with a Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential. (These are generally students who will be referred to community service agencies for post-high school planning and service provision upon graduation)
Instruction in the Student House covers basic personal safety; kitchen and food preparation safety; hand tool safety, proper storage of tools and cleaning supplies; laundry and housekeeping; personal hygiene and safe work practices. The purpose of the Rockland BOCES Student House program is to provide basic daily living skills, along with fundamental job skills to maximize each students' potential. This program supports students in developing employability skills, as well as increasing their self-confidence and social skills.
