Preschool Program

The Rockland BOCES Preschool program serves children ages 3 through 5 with unique challenges at the Lumina School at Viola in Suffern. Eligible students are provided supports and/or services as per their Individual Education Plan (IEP) that are based on each child’s specific needs, as related to their current levels of academic achievement and functional performance.

In order to meet the needs of each student, the Preschool program offers children the ability to participate in a visually-supported classroom with a focus on early childhood life skills. Preschool students reach their potential within nationally-recognized programs that blend high educational standards, innovative curriculum and therapies in a safe, supportive and caring environment.

The Rockland BOCES Preschool program serves students with communicative, cognitive and pervasive developmental disabilities. (i.e. autism, intellectual disability) Preschool curriculum, based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, is focused on instruction-following, tolerating situations, communication and friendship-building. Daily schedules are utilized with extensive data collected for each child.

Children in this 8:1:2 (eight students, one teacher, two teaching assistants) program bring their own experiences, personality and abilities into a personalized learning experience that transforms their lives.
