Special Education

The Rockland BOCES Student Services Division provides a comprehensive array of high quality programs and services to educate students with learning, physical, emotional, social, behavioral and developmental challenges. Individualized instruction is offered in a caring, supportive, student-centered environment that empowers every learner to reach their maximum potential. Children and young adults (ages 5-22) receiving Student Services supports are referred by their home school district Committee on Special Education (CSE).

Care is taken to ensure students are placed - based on their complex learning needs - in programs that best support their growth, academic achievement and personal success as outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). A strength-based approach with research-based pedagogical practices connects our programs as we meet the multifaceted needs of our school community.

Support services (i.e., occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language therapy, nursing, etc.) may be provided in conjunction with a Rockland BOCES special education program or as a stand-alone service, as per the student's IEP. Expert staff collaborate with families, school districts and community-based organizations as educational partners to maximize student progress in academic, language, social, behavioral and physical areas.

Curriculum is adapted to meet New York State learning standards through individualized instruction. Students are provided the opportunity to access the general education curriculum and to fully participate, when appropriate, in the New York State assessment program.

Student Services classes are located in center-based, BOCES-operated schools and in district-based locations within component school district buildings, providing opportunities for participation in the least restrictive educational environment. Students may also access wrap-around, psychiatric and other mental health supports, as well as services and linkages provided through the Family Resource Center (FRC).

Student Services programs described on this website are intended to provide general information. If you believe your child has a disability, contact your home school district's CSE chairperson.
