Health Science Academy

Students develop the skills needed to care for patients in a variety of health-care facilities. Working in a classroom lab and on internships, they gain real world, hands-on experiences in the care of the elderly patient. Topics include anatomy and physiology, body systems, legal and ethical issues, infection control, patient care and comfort measures and skills to assist in the activities of daily living. Students participate in internships where they practice skills such as bed making, bathing, feeding and transferring the elderly patient. This program is a great head start for students who would like to work as a supportive caregiver or pursue further education in the healthcare field. Students will prepare for the New York State Certified Nurse Assisting exam which they will take at the end of the school year.

Students will learn about in-demand careers in the healthcare field. They review the core competencies that are relevant to many health occupations including the basics of the body systems, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and more. In addition, students concentrate on specific skills needed to work in health care fields such as Direct Support Professional and Home Health Aide. Students receive certifications in HIPAA and CPR/ AED. Upon completion of this 1-year course, successful students can be recommended for Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant.
