The Lumina School at Viola Welcomes Students to a New Chapter of Learning

Our Rockland BOCES Lumina School at Viola opened its doors to young learners for the first time this fall, marking an exciting new chapter for students, staff, and the community. All summer long, the Rockland BOCES Facilities and Technology teams worked tirelessly to ensure the former Viola School would be ready to welcome students and staff for the 2024-25 academic year.

Students have quickly settled into their new environment, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Highlights of the renovated school include a modern Home Economics room, an expansive art classroom, and a picturesque courtyard, all designed to support learning, creativity, and personal growth. These young learners are already taking advantage of their new resources as they learn to bake fresh apple pies, paint pumpkins they hand-picked at Dr. Davies's farm and continue to receive one-on-one support from their aids and counselors.

Principal Stephanie Marzan said, “The investment in Lumina shows a real commitment to our children’s future and we're excited to see the positive impact it will have on their education and development.”

The Lumina School at Viola is a K-8 center-based program for both classified and non-classified students who face a variety of learning challenges. The new space, coupled with its comprehensive resources, promises to foster a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
