Adult Education & Business Services

Adult Education and Business Services provides area residents with many opportunities for success. Rockland BOCES offers no cost and reduced tuition courses and services that help adults earn their GED, learn new career skills and enhance their existing skills. We work closely with public and private agencies, area employers and economic development groups to provide a comprehensive system of job training services.

I. Business & Industry Training

BOCES instructors are dynamic and knowledgeable, and have industry diverse experience; and training methods are results-oriented. Sessions are offered at convenient times and locations and can be arranged for one day or over a specified course of time during the work day, evenings or weekends.

II. Adult Literacy Resource Centers

Adult Literacy Resource Centers offer comprehensive programs in adult literacy and career development. Day, evening and weekend classes allow students to build self-confidence, explore career potential, and develop job-readiness skills. Free courses offered to eligible adult students at various locations throughout the county include:

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Adult students learn to
  speak, listen, read, write and understand English.

Workplace Literacy - Students work to improve reading comprehension,
  vocabulary, spelling, grammar and math.

GED - Classes for students over the age of 21 at program sites throughout
  Rockland County.


III. Career Training

Career Training programs provide the adult learner with a variety of opportunities for professional development through CareerTrack short-term or two-year career development programs. A wide variety of courses are offered in the areas of Nursing, Allied Health, Office and Computer skills, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, Auto Technology and Construction Trades. Students are prepared for licensing and certification.

IV. Continuing Education
Continuing education courses are offered to Rockland residents throughout the year. Catalogs describing these offerings are mailed to county residents in August and February. New courses are developed as interest and demand become evident and range in length from one to 30 hours. Typical course offerings include

Q. Where are BOCES Adult Education Programs located?
A. Adult Education and Business Services are located at the BOCES Educational Resource Center (BERC) in Nyack, with additional programs in West Nyack, Spring Valley, Suffern, Haverstraw, Clarkstown, Monsey, and various other sites throughout the county.

Q. Is financial assistance available for BOCES Adult Education Programs?
A.
All programs are either free-supported through local, state or federal grant funds, or paid for by the participant. A convenient tuition payment plan is offered for all fee programs. Limited scholarships are available for adults who qualify. Loans are also available. Interested adults should contact an Adult Education counselor at (845) 348-3500.

Free courses are offered for adults who are at least 21 years old and who do not have an American high school diploma. Instruction is offered in:

• Academic Basic Skills to improve reading, writing, and math achievement
Examination Preparation for GED Diploma
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
GRASP, a home study GED program for those who cannot attend classes
Life Management Skills
Family Education
Career Planning
Work Experience
Citizenship Preparation
