“Great” Grandparents Honored
Foster Grandparent
Recognition Luncheon was held recently at the Jesse J. Kaplan School. The luncheon was prepared by BOCES Culinary Arts students. Words of praise and thanks were lavished on BOCES foster grandparents by District Superintendent Dr. James M. Ryan and Asst. Supt of Special Student Services Dr. Mary Jean Marsico. State Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski addressed the gathering as well, praising the grandparents for all they do for BOCES students.
Hilltop Principal Charles Pittignano, who emceed the event, also spoke with unequivocal admiration about the impact the grandparents have in their classrooms.Mimi Trudeau, assistant principal at Kaplan, and liaison between BOCES and the county’s Foster Grandparents Program spearheaded the organization of the event.
The Mental Health Association of Rockland County was recognized at the luncheon for their support of the grandparents and Jesse Kaplan students following the tragic passing of Grandma McDonnell nearly a year ago.
Under the leadership of Betty Meisler and Fran Alexander, Rockland’s Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors and caregivers for children and youth with exceptional needs. Foster Grandparents participate in pre-service orientation and in-training workshops during their service.
